What Shield Means
People reach for ๐ก๏ธ when they mean weapon, shield, security. Searching Snagmoji for any of those words finds it.
Shield is one of the objects emoji, alongside ๐จ ๐ช โ๏ธ โ๏ธ ๐ ๏ธ and 21 more in the same family.
History & Platforms
Shield was added in 2014 as part of Unicode 7.0. It has artwork in Twemoji, Google's Noto, Microsoft's Fluent, OpenMoji. Apple, Samsung and WhatsApp draw it in their own styles, which is why the same emoji can look a little different from phone to phone.
Under the hood ๐ก๏ธ is the 2-code-point sequence U+1F6E1 U+FE0F, and on GitHub, Slack and most chat apps you can type it as :shield:.
