What Merperson Means
People reach for ๐ง when they mean creature, fairytale, folklore, ocean, sea and similar ideas. Searching Snagmoji for any of those words finds it.
Merperson is one of the people & body emoji, alongside ๐ผ ๐ ๐คถ ๐งโ๐ ๐ฆธ and 25 more in the same family. It supports all five skin tone modifiers, so ๐ง can be sent as ๐ง๐ป ๐ง๐ผ ๐ง๐ฝ ๐ง๐พ ๐ง๐ฟ. It also has person, man and woman variants that you can pick from the emojiโs details on Snagmoji.
History & Platforms
Merperson was added in 2017 as part of Emoji 5.0. It has artwork in Twemoji, Google's Noto, OpenMoji, but not yet in Microsoft's Fluent. Apple, Samsung and WhatsApp draw it in their own styles, which is why the same emoji can look a little different from phone to phone.
Under the hood ๐ง is the single code point U+1F9DC, and on GitHub, Slack and most chat apps you can type it as :merperson:.
